How this part works
Squeezing the lever or pressing the pedal pushes a friction material against a spinning surface: pads clamp a disc through the caliper, or shoes expand against the inside of a drum. The friction turns the wheel's speed into heat. Pads and shoes wear down with use, so replace them when braking feels weak, you hear grinding, or the wear indicator shows.
